On June 12, 2025, Vietnam’s National Assembly approved a major reorganization of provincial-level units, reducing the total from 63 to 34 provinces and centrally-run cities. This change, effective July 1, 2025, introduces a streamlined two-tier local administration system aimed at improving public sector efficiency and supporting Vietnam’s goal to become a high-income, developed country by 2045.
